Hi Guys! Is there any program I can get that will turn .txt files into .mp3 files with some sort of synthesized voice? Thanks lots in advance!

You can check out http://www.naturalreaders.com/index.htm
They have got a free version which uses sapi5 voices and another version with natural voices but it's not free.

Alternatively you could use programs like SoundForge, Gold Wave or Sound Recorder to record the output of your sound card and record your screen reader reading the file, then just save it as an MP3 file. That would work.

Thanks. Dan.

If you have a scanning program like Kurzweil or openbook, they each have ways to create mp3 files.

How do you do that with Kurzweil? I remember the older versions being able to do that, but I can't figure out how to get the newer versions to do it.

It's in chapter 13 of the manual under file portability.

Basically, what you do is hit alt+f for the file menu.
Arrow down to utilities.
Press right arrow (or enter) for the utilities menu.
and arrow down to "create audio file", and press enter.
Vuala! You're there.

openbook and kurzweil do this. If you just want this functionality, I love Nextup.com's Text Aloud MP3.

Also, D speech (spelled dspeech) is a good program to use for short text files, like 2 pages or maybe 10 pages. you can get up to 128 kbps, 44.1 khz mp3 filess created with it, and it can use sapi 5 or sapi 4 voices. I once tryed mp3ing an h p fanfic called harry Potter and the Manipulator of Destony, and it took like 6 hours, but that's because it was 500 k or more. The result is very good though. Best advice is to start the process before you go to bed, and then when you get up in the morning, it'll be done. Also, the program can be used to generate conversations between multiple voices. Its cool for doing stuff like that. Its free as well. i think the site is www.dspeech.com. if that won't work, then just type dspeech into google. for a sample mp3 of harry potter and the manipulator of destony, please contact me on skype by calling src333. please note that I did not write the fic, i just mp3ed it.

Y'all, check out
www.spokentext.net
! You can set up free accounts and have books converted into .mp3 files, zipped sets of 15-minute mp3 files, or iPod type files that I forget the name of...It's like m4b or something. It's so sick. The only problem is that there's not a lot of voices yet, and they're kind of annoyign...but still! Dig it...It rocks!

Go to microsoft and download SpeechSDK51, it's free, 80 MB.

I've used dspeech. I don't use it much, but the voices that the college have are neospeech paul and neospeech kate. I think those voices are OK and the pieces of work I've put into mp3 form are only about a page or so long.

The following may be another option.

Hello,
hmm interesting ideas here.
I tried something like ultrahaltext reader or something like that from zabaware? I think yes.
My friend developed in autoIT great program for converting txt files to mp3. It's composed from three programs - one converts text to wave using your predeffined voice (you can set it in control panel>program speech). Then an other program converts wave to mp3 and third program allows you to split mp3 to parts (for example from 8 hours of one file you can do 8 files - each with hour of reading). Unfortunatelly, program is only in czech.
But when you install program, a new item is made in send to... menu - text2mp3. So when you open context menu on some txt file (or files), it'll automaticaly start to convert. Tray icon will appear. Time of conversion depends on length of file, speed of your voice and processor. Don't be afraid, file isn't converted in real time, it's much shorter.
Then window of ms-dos wll appear - do not do anything with it! It's window of text2mp3 - it is converting wave to mp3.
Then a dialobox will appear with some czech language and yes and no. It is asking you, if you would like to split file to parts. If you'll click no, a dialog box will appear with some results. If you'll click yes on the previous box, you can enter format in hh.mm or something like that - there is an example.
ty it. Remember you can not convert any text greater then 1 mb because of size of created wave file can not extend 2 gb or something like that.
enjoy
